Saving Money With Smart Thermostats

With advanced technology for smart home devices on the market, ease of use, energy savings, and convenience make these products good buys. In South Florida our air conditioning bill can be one of our biggest monthly expenses so it's important to take advantage of the savings provided with this new technology.

Here are some of the benefits that a smart thermostat provides:

  • Remote control access through your smartphone, tablet or computer
  • Capability to program temperatures for an optimal climate
  • Conserve energy usage (especially for the forgetful)
  • Create a comfortable home environment
  • Maintain an optimal climate while you’re on vacation
  • Receive energy reports to help you save on your power bill

We installed our smart thermostat a few years ago, and one of my favorite features is the ability to control the home temperature when we are away from home. There are several brands on the market to pick from. Do your research and pick one that offers you the features you desire and start saving money!

Spring is here and South Florida is heating up! If you are new to Florida you might be in for a shock when you get your electric bill in the next few months. For those of you who are used to our very brief cool days, you know that it is important to keep on top of energy consumption. Here are a few things you can do to save money this time of year:

  1. Cool your home at 78 degrees with the thermostat fan on AUTO. For extra savings, set your thermostat to 82 degrees when you are away from home.
  2. Replace or clean your A/C filter on a regular schedule, such as the first of every month to reduce cooling costs. Make sure your a/c line is clean and is not clogged, and hire a professional to conduct an annual maintenance if you are not handy in this area.
  3. Turn off your ceiling fans when you leave the room.  Each fan running all the time is costing you extra every month. And turn off your lights!
  4. Lower your water heater temperature to 120 degrees as recommended by the U.S. Department of Energy. This should save a few dollars every month as well.
  5. Limit the time your pool pump is running to six hours per day through the hot summer months.
These tips should help control your energy consumption costs - take care!

With the South Florida Spring season comes higher electric bills mainly to crank up the a/c and stay cool!  It's that time of the year again, and here is a reminder from last year's blog on how to save energy from FPL:

  1. Cool your home at 78 degrees with the thermostat fan on AUTO.  For extra savings, set your thermostat to 82 degrees when you are away from home.
  2. Replace or clean your A/C filter on a regular schedule, such as the first of every month to reduce cooling costs.
  3. Turn off your ceiling fan when you leave the room.  Each fan running all the time is costing you more than $7 per month!
  4. Lower your water heater temperature to 120 degrees as recommended by the U.S. Department of Energy.  This should save you about $2 per month.

If you are new to this area of the country, believe me, all of these tips can add up to savings.  Try these tips from FPL, all you have to lose is some of that really high electric bill!

More money saving tips to come, have a great weekend and stay cool!
