Hurricane Dorian - Lessons Learned
September 5th, 2019 12:48 AM
The past few weeks have been full of storm preparations and anxiety for many of us in the state of Florida. Let us be grateful that Dorian missed us here in Broward County, and help those who were not so lucky if you can.

Please remember:  Hurricane season continues until November 30th. The peak of the season is August through October - be prepared for the possibility of a storm landing in our area at any time during the season. As some of you learned with Dorian, we normally have time to prepare thanks to the storm tracking systems in place. We had plenty of time - days, weeks even - to get our homes ready in the event of landfall. When the possibility of a storm begins, keep your gas tanks topped, make sure your non-perishables are stocked, and by now you should have a hurricane kit for the possibility of loss of electricity.

As Florida residents, we know that waiting until the last minute to prepare can cause headaches! Long lines for gas, propane, water, and other supplies, are some of those things you may have experienced this time around. As a reminder from a prior post, do a few things now so that you do not have to deal with long lines and shortage of supplies!

  • Clean and save some empty plastic jugs to fill with water.
  • Write down emergency numbers and any contacts you will need on paper in case we lose internet/cell phone/electricity.
  • Inventory your possessions - take pictures and make a file.
  • Make sure your insurance policies are up to date.
  • Make a hurricane preparedness kit.
  • Make a plan in case you have to evacuate (and don't forget your pet's plan).

Please note that I do not work for Broward County. I am a well qualified, state licensed, real estate appraiser. I provide appraisals for a variety of purposes for those properties located within Broward County. If you have any questions or are in need of an appraiser, please contact me any time!
